Hotels widely comp Level 2 for guests (filter for it when booking; it's worth real money on road trips). Workplaces remain the single richest source — free or at-cost charging is a common benefit that a shocking number of employees never ask about.

Municipal and library lots in EV-friendly towns still host free Level 2, visitor centers and casinos use it as a lure, and some automakers bundle charging credits or years of limited free sessions with new models — check what your car's badge includes before paying anywhere.

Finding it systematically

The community map apps (PlugShare being the canonical one) let you filter explicitly for free stations and read recent check-ins — five minutes of filtering builds your personal free-charging map. ChargePoint's app surfaces its many host-comped stations. The pattern worth internalizing: free charging clusters where someone profits from your parked presence — retail, hospitality, employers — so think in destinations, not chargers.

Reality check so the hunt stays rational: driving across town for free Level 2 burns time to save roughly $1.50–2.50/hour of charging. Free charging is a happy layer on top of errands you were doing anyway, not a treasure hunt with an hourly wage below minimum.

The etiquette that keeps free chargers free

Move when done — a full car squatting on a free charger is why hosts add fees. Don't treat the grocery charger as overnight storage; while-you-shop means what it says. Report broken stalls in the apps so the host hears it from customers. And spend something where you charge — the entire economics of retail free charging is that plugged-in visitors are good customers. Every abused free charger becomes next year's 45¢/kWh charger.
